While sclerotherapy is a good varicose vein treatment option for a wide range of patients, it is not recommended for patients who:
- Are pregnant
- Have had a baby within the last 6 months
- Are breastfeeding
- Are immobile and can’t get out of bed
- Have large varicose veins
- Have a blood clot, or a history of blood clots

What is Sclerotherapy? Everything You Need to Know About This Varicose Vein Treatment
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for spider and varicose veins. During the procedure, your vein specialist will inject a sclerosing agent into the vein, causing it to scar. This will cause the vein to close off and eventually disappear.
Sclerotherapy Is Most Effective for Spider Veins
Typically, sclerotherapy is used for treating spider veins, small blue/red veins that don’t bulge or cause symptoms. While largely effective for spider veins, sclerotherapy can help with the symptoms of varicose veins as well.
Echosclerotherapy for Varicose Veins
Echosclerotherapy is a very effective solution for deeper varicose veins that are not visible, and it can be used to address your concerns without the need for invasive surgeries which can run the risk of scarring, infection, and other undesirable conditions.
The Sclerotherapy Procedure
Sclerotherapy is usually performed in your doctor’s office in an outpatient setting. Before your procedure, you must schedule a consultation with your vein specialist to discuss your aesthetic goals and medical history, including your medication and allergies.
On the day of your varicose vein treatment, DO NOT put lotion on your legs and make sure to wear loose and comfortable clothing. Here are some quick facts about the treatment:
- The sclerosing agent will be injected directly into your vein using a very fine needle
- You may feel a pricking or slightly burning sensation
- Multiple veins can be treated in one session
- The procedure can take up to 30-45 minutes
- The agent will cause the walls of the injected vein to seal shut, redirecting the blood to unaffected veins
- Over time, your body absorbs the damaged vein, making it less visible and uncomfortable
How to Prepare For a Sclerotherapy Treatment
In order to ensure you get the best results from your sclerotherapy treatment, there are certain steps you should take to prepare for the procedure. This includes:
- Having a consultation with your vein specialist. They can help determine if this is the right treatment for you.
- Avoid certain medications a few days before your treatment, such as ibuprofen and aspirin. This will reduce your risk of bruising.
- Avoid applying lotion or shaving your legs before sclerotherapy. This will help you avoid any irritation.
- You may also want to purchase a compression stocking, because you will be required to wear one for several days following the procedure.
