SCLEROTHERAPY TREATMENT IN CALGARY

How to Prepare For a Sclerotherapy Treatment

When it comes to eliminating spider veins and small varicose veins, sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice. It has many benefits for patients, but understanding the basics of what it entails and any specific preparation instructions can help you avoid unwanted stress on the day of your appointment, and as you heal.

5 QUICK FACTS ABOUT SCLEROTHERAPY

What Happens During a Sclerotherapy Treatment?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. During this procedure, a very fine needle will be used to inject solution into these veins, which causes them to shrink, close, and disappear.

Benefits: Outward appearance and symptoms of varicose veins and spider veins, such as swelling and pain, typically improve after just one treatment.

How long does it take? A sclerotherapy treatment typically takes less than an hour to complete, and most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure.

What to Do Before Your Sclerotherapy Treatment

  • Shower and wash your legs with antibacterial soap the morning of your procedure.
  • Make sure to wear loose fitting clothes and comfortable shoes.
  • Talk to your physician about any and all medications you are taking, especially estrogen or birth control pills.
  • Bring your compression stockings if you already have them. If not, you will need to purchase a pair for after your treatment.
  • Avoid applying lotion to your legs or shaving them before your treatment.
  • If you take aspirin or any other blood thinner, make sure to ask your doctor if you should stop taking it before your procedure.
  • Don’t drink or smoke for at least 2 days before your appointment. This is important because it may hinder your healing.
  • Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you may have. This includes past history of vein problems or if you are pregnant. It’s recommended that pregnant women wait until several months after giving birth to have this treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have been treated for spider or varicose veins in the past.
  • Avoid hot baths, direct sunlight, whirlpools/ saunas and hot compresses for at least 48 hours.
