How Echosclerotherapy Works

With ultrasound guidance, a physician accurately guides the needle, filled the sclerosing agent, and injects the hidden abnormal veins. Once injected, the treated vessel will collapse and gradually be absorbed by the body, disappearing over time.

Duration: This is a relatively quick treatment that takes up to 30 minutes to complete. You may want to allocate one hour to allow for sufficient time for preparation, ultrasound examination, and discussion.

The number of treatments: Depending on the number of varicose veins you have, you may need 2-3 sessions of this treatment, and occasionally more than this.

Results: Following the injection, you may experience a slight discomfort along the course of the injected vein. However, this will disappear in a few minutes. As the vein closes over the next few weeks, you may experience some bruising and tenderness. Your body will reabsorb the vein in approximately 6-18 months.

 

Am I a Good Candidate For Echosclerotherapy?

While echosclerotherapy is an extremely safe and effective way of treating deep varicose veins, it is not a suitable treatment for everyone.

It is often NOT recommended for patients who:

• Have a history of migraine headaches
• Have veins that are too twisted
• Suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma
• Are pregnant and/ or breastfeeding
• Have a genetic tendency towards clotting of the blood

Echosclerotherapy is an extremely effective method of targeting deeper and non-visible varicose veins, but it is not a suitable treatment for everyone.
