The Science Behind Microneedling

The Science Behind Microneedling

Microneedling is a powerful and innovative facial rejuvenation treatment that utilizes a mechanized device with ultra-fine needles to penetrate layers of skin. The resulting micro-injuries trigger the skin’s own natural healing response, encouraging the production of new collagen and elastin. Fine lines and wrinkles become smoother and your skin appears brighter. Over a short period of time, microneedling has gained mass popularity as it is a minimally-invasive, safe, and effective technique which offers patients incredible aesthetic skin results. Initially introduced for skin rejuvenation, it is commonly used for a very wide range of applications including treatment of sun damage, wrinkles, alopecia, acne scars, burn scars, hyperpigmentation, and stretch marks.

Why Do I Want More Collagen and Elastin In My Skin?

The skin, the largest organ in the human body, has three main functions: to protect, to regulate temperature, and for sensation. Collagen is a protein that is secreted by fibroblasts in the dermal layer of your skin. The dermis lies below the epidermis (the outer layer of skin). As the epidermis is avascular, that is, lacking blood vessels, it depends entirely on the underlying dermis for nutrient delivery and waste disposal. The dermis consists primarily of collagen (80%)  and bodily connective tissues. Collagen provides strength for the dermis and functions to:

  • Protect the outer layers of skin
  • Cushion deep structures from physical injury
  • Nourish the epidermis
  • Heal wounds

Elastin is a protein that provides your skin with elasticity. Elastin allows your skin to ‘snap back’ after being pulled or stretched. Aging naturally decreases the amount of collagen and elastin in our skin, which causes it to wrinkle and sag. If you’re looking for an anti-aging treatment that helps turn back the hands of time, and enjoy a refreshed and youthful appearance, microneedling may be for you. How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling, or Collagen Induction Therapy, triggers your body to create new collagen and elastin, resulting in a more youthful, smoother and refreshed appearance. Benefits include an improvement in skin tone and texture, firmness, as well as reduction in scars and stretch marks.

While spa microneedling penetrates the epidermis, medical-grade microneedling reaches deep into the dermis which makes it ideal for scar revision and more aggressive collagen building. During treatment, the microneedling device glides along your skin, penetrating the layers closest to the surface to create numerous tiny punctures. These tiny channels initiate healing and also serve as entry points for the deep delivery of a range of skin rejuvenating products such as vitamin serums. One microneedling treatment can last up to one hour.

What Are The Advantages Of Microneedling?
Microneedling is cost-effective, and can be done in areas where chemical peels or laser resurfacing cannot – like around the eyes or mouth. It’s well tolerated by patients, has minimal downtime, and is adaptable to each patient’s needs. For example,  areas with skin damage that require a more aggressive approach can be treated with a longer needle. It can help in the treatment of a variety of skin issues such as elimination of skin irregularities such as hyperpigmentation, sun spots, or large pores.

Is Microneedling For You?

If you have considered cosmetic procedures such as microdermabrasion or laser resurfacing, but you want to see quicker healing times and skin results that are apparent within a week, you may opt for microneedling. Microneedling is safe for people with any skin tone and of almost any age. Learn more about the costs and benefits of microneedling treatments here

FAQ

Q: Is microneedling safe?
A: Microneedling, or Collagen Induction Therapy has been proven to be safe for all skin tones, races, and ethnicities. Microneedling is excellent for all types of skin texture and complexion issues such as fine lines, pigment spots, dullness, acne scars, enlarged pores, dark spots, stretch marks and scars. It is essential to avoid microneedling during an active skin infection or an acne flare up . The microneedle punctures could transfer bacteria to other parts of your skin and spread the acne or infection.

Q: What does microneedling feel like?
A:  Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure which does not “burn” your skin like peels or more invasive lasers. The needle penetration depth can be adjusted depending on the area of the body and the skin condition being treated. Your skin will be red for approximately 8 hours after your procedure, however most patients return to work the next day.  You’ll notice a more radiant appearance after several days but the full effects of your treatment will only be visible after several weeks. Some individuals may experience more prolonged redness or darkening of their skin, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Q: Will I need to repeat treatments?
A: Often a series of 3-6 treatments spread at least one month apart, is recommended to experience the full benefits of this procedure. It is recommended that maintenance treatments are booked every 6 - 12 months. Depending on your age and skin texture, you can repeat the treatment anytime between 6 weeks and one year to safely obtain results.
