How To Care For Your Skin After Microneedling Treatment

How To Care For Your Skin After Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling enhances beauty by diminishing the appearance of scars, large pores, and deep wrinkles, among other things. It is a technique that helps you regain the bright complexion of youth, and firmer feeling skin. With ultra-fine needles, a microneedling device creates tiny punctures, and stimulates collagen and elastin production. Since the needles are short, thin, and move over the surface quickly, each puncture only minimally injures the epidermis. As the skin begins to heal from the micro-penetrations, previous scars diminish and fade, your skin will glow, and you will feel more vibrant. The key to fully benefiting from this minimally-invasive procedure is to take steps to protect your skin barrier while it is healing.

How Microneedling Affects Your Skin

When you leave the clinic after your microneedling session, you may notice redness and flushing as if you have spent a full day unprotected in the sun. Some consider the inflammation phase similar to a mild to moderate sunburn, however, the swelling will reduce significantly in the first 48 hours. There may be residual effects such as bumps, dryness, acne, or flaking, but healing continues under the surface of your skin for up to 2 months. You can minimize side effects with proper aftercare and gentle skin products. Fortunately, the healing period for microneedling is reasonably short in comparison with other skin repair treatments. How Do I Care For My Skin After Microneedling?

Once microneedling triggers your skin’s healing systems into overdrive, you will begin to notice new, collagen-rich tissue that provides noticeable lift and brightness to your skin. There is, however, a period of time following treatment that requires some aftercare to help aid your skin’s recovery. If you follow a few important tips, you can support that healing while your skin is highly vulnerable:

  1. Sun Protection - while it may feel lovely to have the warmth of the sun on your face, UV radiation exposure can hinder the results you desire from your procedure. Ideally, you should avoid spending prolonged time outdoors initially to avoid sun damage. However, if you do go outside, be sure to fully protect your skin whenever you are outside for at least the first 2 weeks after treatment with a recommended sunscreen protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Sunscreen works best when reapplied every 2 hours.
  2. Infection - naturally-occurring bacteria helps to keep pores healthy, but if harmful bacteria access your pores, it can lead to acne or infections. Microneedling exposes your skin to the potential threats of bacteria, so wash your hands before you touch your face and only use clean towels to dry it. Avoid using makeup for a minimum of 24 hours, and once you do, be sure to use cleaned makeup applicators. Protect your skin from the effects of sweat by avoiding swimming pools, saunas, and intense exercise for at least 72 hours. Finally, follow your skin specialist’s direction regarding using topical antibiotics or creams on your face after treatment.
  3. Irritants - whether chemical or physical, certain irritants can exacerbate your skin’s redness and cause discomfort. For 3-4 days following your treatment, avoid using facial scrubs, electric or battery powered brushes, and active cosmetic ingredients such as Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Vitamin C, or Retinol (Vitamin A). It is best to avoid immersing yourself in natural bodies of water, pools, or hot tubs during the first week.
  4. Drink Water! - Hydrating your skin is central to supporting your skin during collagen generation. Water is the best elixir for your body to be able to function well, since it is the main component of all your cells. The more hydrated you are, the healthier your skin will be!

Proper skin care after microneedling will directly contribute to an optimal outcome of your microneedling treatment. Aftercare can soothe uncomfortable symptoms, and provide essential protection during the healing period. Once you book your complimentary consultation, the skin specialists at Glenmore Landing Vein Clinic will assess your skin’s condition and review your budget and aesthetic goals to create a customized treatment plan that will suit your specific needs. Q: Is microneedling safe?
A: Yes, receiving microneedling from a trained dermatologist is completely safe. It has been proven to be safe for all skin tones, races, and ethnicities. Microneedling is excellent for all types of skin texture and complexion issues such as fine lines, pigment spots, dullness, acne scars, enlarged pores, dark spots, stretch marks, and scars.

Q: How will my skin look after a microneedling treatment?
A: Your skin will be red for approximately 8 hours after your procedure, however most patients return to work the next day.  You’ll notice a more radiant appearance after several days but the full effects of your treatment will only be visible after several weeks. Some individuals may experience more prolonged redness or darkening of their skin, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Q: How many treatments will I need to reach optimal results?
A: To experience the full benefits of microneedling, and extend the effects of the results, patients may book 3-6 treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. It is recommended that you repeat the treatments within 6 - 12 months to maintain your results.
