An innovative cosmetic treatment, microneedling is growing in popularity as a way for helping patients achieve brighter and younger-looking skin. Using a device covered with tiny, shallow needles, your skincare specialist will cause a ‘micro injury’ to the treatment area to stimulate collagen production.
In this way, you will achieve softer and more youthful skin after just 4-5 sessions. It can be used effectively for a number of concerns such as:
- Acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Facial volume loss
- Skin pigmentation

Pre and Post Microneedling Skin Care Tips: What You Need to Do
Microneedling is a minimally invasive, safe, and effective cosmetic procedure and can help patients achieve incredible anti-aging results. However, as with all cosmetic treatments, it’s very important that you take care of your skin before and after your procedure to ensure the fastest recovery and safest results.
How to Take Care of Your Skin Before a Microneedling Treatment
During your consultation, your skincare specialist will advise you on how to take care of your skin prior to your microneedling treatment. Following these instructions will ensure that the procedure goes smoothly and it will minimize any side effects.
Some of these tips include avoiding:
- Topical agents such as retinoids, exfoliants, and topical antibiotics for at least 5-7 days prior to your treatment. These may increase the sensitivity of your skin.
- Accutane for at least 6 months before beginning your micro-needling sessions.
- Anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin, Advil, and ibuprofen for at least 3 days prior to your treatment. This is important because anti-inflammatories can interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical for skin rejuvenation.
- Laser treatments, sun exposure, and tanning beds for at least 14 days before the treatment.
- Waxing, skin removal creams, and electrolysis for one week before the treatment.
- Shaving the day of your treatment as this will cause skin irritation. If you have hair in the treatment area, shave at least 1-2 days before the procedure.
- Blood-thinning agents for 1 week before the procedure because bruising is a common side effect of micro-needling.
Additional tip: If you are prone to cold sores, talk to your skincare specialist about taking an antiviral agent for 2 days before microneedling.
How to Take Care of Your Skin Following Your Microneedling Treatment
As with any cosmetic treatment, it’s important to look after your skin following your microneedling procedure to ensure the best results. Here are some tips you should follow:
- Don’t use ice on the treatment area. This may interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical for skin rejuvenation and the best results.
- Avoid sun tanning and any prolonged exposure to the sun for at least 14 days. After this, always use sunblock (30SPF or higher) and wear a hat when you’re outside.
- Use Tylenol to alleviate any soreness you may experience.
- Avoid any anti-inflammatory medication for at least one week after your treatment.
Rejuvenated Appearance in Just One Week
Typically, most patients can begin their regular skincare routine after one week, when the skin no longer feels irritated. Most patients notice continued skin improvement over the months following their procedure.
For the best microneedling results: It’s recommended that patients get repeat treatments every 4-6 weeks, with a series of 3-5 treatments for best results. This will vary according to your personalized skincare plan.
