3 Types of Chemical Peels: Which is Right For You?

As you age, dead skin cells don’t shed as easily, causing your skin to appear dull and rough. Chemical peels are an effective non-surgical cosmetic treatment that peel away the damaged upper layers of skin, improving the texture of your skin, while restoring a radiant and more youthful appearance.

Depending on the severity of your concerns, there are 3 different levels of chemical peels available:

1. Light Chemical Peel

Using a specific chemical solution, a light chemical peel works to remove only the outer layer of damaged skin, encouraging new cell growth and resulting in a healthier glow.

During this treatment, your skin specialist will cleanse the treatment area and then brush the chemical solution onto your skin and leave it there for a few minutes. After this, he/she will wash off the peel and neutralize it

Light chemical peels can be used to:

  • Treat light wrinkles caused by aging or sun damage
  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes or around the mouth
  • Improve the texture of your skin
  • Eliminate the appearance of mild scars
  • Treat certain types of acne
  • Reduce age spots, freckles, and other mild skin blemishes

Recovery Time: 1-7 Days

2. Medium Chemical Peel

Using trichloroacetic acid, your skin care specialist will remove dead skin cells from both the outer layer and upper part of your middle layer to reveal healthier, smoother skin below. Also known as TCA chemical peels, these peels provide more dramatic results than light chemical peels and don’t require the extended recovery time of deep peels.

They can be used to:

  • Correct acne scars
  • Address uneven pigmentation
  • Improve the texture and tone of the skin
  • Smooth out fine lines and wrinkles

A medium chemical peel can be used to treat any area of the body and take only minutes to complete.

Recovery Time: 7-14 days

3. Deep Chemical Peel

During this treatment, your skin care specialist will use the strongest chemical called phenol to penetrate down to the lower dermal layer of your skin. For this type of chemical peel, patients require a local anesthetic and sedative to manage the discomfort.

Some of the benefits of a deep chemical peel include:

  • Long lasting results (up to 10 years)
  • Dramatic improvement in appearance after just one treatment
  • It can treat skin discoloration and very deep wrinkles
  • It’s very successful at improving acne scars

Recovery Time: Deep chemical peels will result in peeling, crusting, and discomfort for several days to weeks. The recovery time is typically 14-21 days.
