At our Calgary vein clinic, we offer fully customized varicose and spider vein treatments for our clients. Here are three main differences between varicose veins and spider veins and how our skin specialists can help eliminate any pain, discomfort, or aesthetic concerns you have regarding these conditions.
Spider vein and varicose vein treatments are designed to treat any abnormal veins that usually develop in the legs and feet. While spider veins are closer to the skin surface and smaller, varicose veins often appear blue, twisted, and bulging. If you are suffering from any of these two conditions, there are a number of treatment options available, including:
- Echosclerotherapy
- Sclerotherapy
- Vein surgery
- Laser/photodynamic therapy
- Compression stockings

3 Main Differences Between Spider and Varicose Veins
Although spider veins and varicose veins are both classified as vein disorders, there are some distinct differences between them that you need to be aware of. These include:
1. Causes
Spider veins are usually genetic. Other causes of them include obesity, female hormones, and prolonged sitting and standing.
On the other hand, varicose veins are often a result of valves that function incorrectly. These valves allow blood to flow backwards into the leg, causing increased pressure in the veins. This dilates and elongates the vein, causing it to protrude or appear curved or twisted.
2. Symptoms
Typically, spider veins do not cause any symptoms, such as discomfort or pain, and primarily pose a cosmetic concern. They are mostly treated to improve the appearance of the patient’s legs.
On the other hand, varicose veins can result in a number of symptoms including:
- Heaviness
- Aching
- Pressure and swelling
They can also cause fatigue and, in some cases, restless or jittery legs and itching. Unlike with spider veins, relief of pain and discomfort are the primary reasons why most varicose veins are treated.
3. The Treatments
Spider and varicose veins are almost always treated in the office with minimally invasive techniques. Sclerotherapy — the injection of a special solution into the vein, shutting it down — can be used to treat spider veins and smaller varicose veins.
However, varicose veins that cannot be easily located can be treated using echosclerotherapy. This highly specialized treatment uses an ultrasound machine to detect deeper varicose veins, allowing your physician to accurately inject the sclerosing agent into hidden abnormal veins.
When compared to traditional varicose vein treatments, both sclerotherapy and echosclerotherapy offer enormous benefits, including:
- Minimally invasive procedure
- Extremely precise and accurate results
- Minimal discomfort and few side effects
- Short treatment times
- Dramatic and permanent results
- Cell damage is minimized
If you are looking for a virtually painless solution to your varicose and spider veins, then we have the answer for you! We can create customized sclerotherapy and echosclerotherapy treatments to address all your spider and varicose vein concerns and drastically reduce their appearance.
